October kicks off the most wonderful time of the year to visit Rappahannock County, Virginia: Autumn! The air is cool and crisp, the leaves are changing and the mountains are a riot of color. Located close to Washington, DC, and the DC Metro Area, the County is the perfect place for a day or weekend getaway, and there’s so much on offer in Autumn: craft demonstrations, art instruction, open studio experiences, gallery openings, culinary experiences, wonderful brews and wines, live entertainment, special rates and more! With the Shenandoah National Park in our back yard, the options for hiking and enjoying the outdoors abound. And, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention our many wonderful orchards and farm stands, chock full of locally grown apples, cider, pumpkins and more!

We feature local artists’ work in ceramics, glass, jewelry, fine art paintings, prints, and hand-dyed yarn and silk scarves. Get a leg up on Holiday shopping! Monotype Demonstration Join artist Carolyn Roth in her studio as she demonstrates how to create a multi-layered monotype. Roth’s work, expressed in paintings, prints and mixed media, embraces aspects of the natural world, cultural diversity, and the subconscious. Noon – 4 p.m.
De’Danann Glassworks – Trail site #4 (23 Spyder Mountain Lane, Sperryville, Va 22740)
Making Fused Glass Earrings Fused glass is the process of melting glass together in a kiln at a high temperature. Artist Patricia Brennan will teach students how to cut glass and explain the process of using a glass kiln. Working with small pieces of different colored glass, students will each create 3 pairs of earrings in this class. They will make and fuse the earrings on Saturday and arrange a time to pick up their projects after the earrings are out of the kiln and cooled the next day. Glass Engraving Master engraver Patty Sevre demonstrates hand-carved and engraved illustration on fine crystal and glass. While you watch, Sevre will custom engrave a design for you on wine glasses, decanters or other items with special pricing. Sevre creates her unique engravings with little more than revolving stones, copper and diamond wheels, and cooling water. Come see her unique hand engraving firsthand! 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Nancy Brittle Exhibition “Completing the painting in one sitting works best for my goals of freshness of both idea and paint,” says Brittle on her alla prima painting style. “For the last year, I have been consciously working with looser but more precise brushstrokes on smaller canvases. I work from life, the subjects usually being my family and my home. These works reflect my effort to create a painting, not a picture.” Open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Artist talk from 3 – 4 p.m.

Harvest Fest After the harvest in ancient India, the Festival of Lights, or Diwali, marked the end of the farming year. As grape growers in Virginia, Sudha and Pandit keep the tradition alive and the Indian harvest festival of DIWALI is one of our most anticipated events of the year. Dinners or antipasto and cheese platters are available by pre-order. There will be a dance performance followed by a Bollywood dance lesson and then freestyle dancing. All ages and skill levels are welcome. The evening concludes with a fireworks display at 7:30 p.m. 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Artisan Jewelry Demonstration Jeweler Gina Irwin will be demonstrating the art of sheet and wire construction, using sterling silver and assorted stones. See Irwin at work while enjoying apple cider and assorted snacks. 11 a.m. – 6 p.m.

Play With Clay! Potters will be working in the studio, answering questions, sharing techniques and introducing new products. Join in the free “play with clay” workshop from 2 – 4 p.m. Studio open 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Warmglass Designs – Trail site #109 (Located at Ginger Hill Antiques, 12625 Lee Hwy, Washington, VA 22747)
Glass Suncatcher Workshop Artist Jennifer Webb will teach you how to fuse glass to make your own suncatcher. A round clear base and colored glass are provided to make a mandala – a circular pattern that starts from the center. All tools and materials are supplied. Suncatchers will be fired off site and ready for pick-up within a week. Fee: $10.00 (Additional $5 fee if shipping needed.) 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
